The North Liberty City Council has approved a special election to fill an open seat on March 15th.

The Press-Citizen reports that the decision to hold the election instead of simply appointing someone to fill the term was reached on a 3-1 vote.

The open seat occurred when previous city councilor Chris Hoffman was elected North Liberty mayor.

The term for the open seat expires at the end of 2023. North Liberty will pay $5000 to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office to administer the special election.

Interested candidates must be at least 18, a resident of the city, and an eligible voter. A minimum of 19 signatures must be collected on the nomination petition form, and the form must be submitted with an affidavit of candidacy. Both forms can be found on the Iowa Secretary of State website and must be submitted to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office by end of business February 18th.

The city will utilize only one polling place for this election, at the Community Center on West Cherry Street. The site will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.
