A University of Iowa student faces charges after allegedly stealing from a downtown convenience store “out of spite.”

Officers were called to the Kum & Go at 25 West Burlington Street on reports of a theft of candy bars just before 2:30am Saturday. They reportedly found 19-year-old Samuel Speck of Des Moines walking a short distance away.

When officers approached Speck, he reportedly threw the candy bars to the ground behind him. Upon contact, he allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, and unsteady balance. Speck reportedly told officers that he stole the candy to “spite” the cashier, after getting trespassed from the location the Saturday before.

A post-arrest PBT showed his blood alcohol level at .102 percent.

Speck faces charges of Public Intoxication and 5th degree Theft, and was issued another Trespass warning. He could face 60 days in jail if convicted on the criminal charges.
