An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after an overnight assault incident in the downtown area.

According to police, they were called to the area of the Sports Column on South Dubuque Street at 1:40 am Friday for a fight in progress. When an officer arrived, he was directed to a male who had been knocked unconscious and was choking on his own blood. Contact was made with 18-year-old Maxwell Powers of North Dubuque Street, who reportedly admitted to getting aggressive and shoving someone.

However, a witness told police that Powers repeatedly punched the victim in the face after another subject threw the victim to the ground. The victim had a bloody face and headache as a result of the assault.

Powers allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, and was wearing a bar wristband. When the officer got consent retrieve the wallet from the pocket of Powers, he reportedly opened it to find a completely fictitious Illinois driver’s license making him appear to be of legal drinking age.

Powers was taken into custody. He’s been charged with Disorderly Conduct, Public Intoxication, Possession of a fake ID, and being underage in a bar past 10 pm. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 14 months in jail.
