A Coralville man has been taken into custody on a Criminal Mischief warrant after he allegedly caused hundreds of dollars in damage to an apartment building last month.

Police say the incident occurred during the noon hour on December 3rd at the building on 20th Avenue Place. 28-year-old Damien Gilchrist, who lives on the same block, reportedly tested the entry door to the building and apparently realized he couldn’t get in due to the door being locked and secured. Gilchrist kept pulling at the door until he allegedly disabled the door brake and broke it.

Property management told authorities it cost $600 to fix the door.

A warrant was issued for Gilchrist’s arrest on January 21st; the warrant was served late Tuesday night and he was booked at the Johnson County Jail and released. He’s been charged with 4th degree Criminal Mischief, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
