An Iowa City resident who runs an insurance agency has announced he’s running for the open seat that will become available when state representative Joe Bolkcom retires at the end of the year.

The Press-Citizen reports that 62-year-old John Raley is a political novice but feels now is the time to get involved. He is a member of the Iowa City Business Partnership, the Iowa City Area Development Group and is the past president of National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

Among the issues Raley wants to address include investing in education, increasing aid to small businesses in the wake of the pandemic, and creating a better financial literacy program for high school students.

He tells the newspaper that being a businessman with leadership skills instead of a career politician will be seen as an asset to voters.

Raley joins Janice Weiner as the only other candidate who’s announced for Senate District 45. Candidates have until March 18th to get on the June 7th primary. The deadline to register to vote in the primaries is May 23rd.
