Hitting a police officer instead of her ex-boyfriend has led to the arrest of a Cedar Rapids woman.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon just before 2:30 in the 2500 block of Sylvan Glen Court. 18-year-old Ma’Lajia Wilson of 9th Street Northwest contacted police, saying that her ex-boyfriend took her phone. When the ex showed up with the phone, Wilson returned to the scene. The officer told her to return to her car, but she refused.

Wilson allegedly started a confrontation with the ex-boyfriend, which was separated by the officer. Wilson then reportedly tried to hit her ex-boyfriend but instead hit the officer in the side of the head. She then took off running.

Police say Wilson returned to the scene a few minutes later, and was told she was under arrest. She allegedly pulled away from police and the officers on scene had to physically place her hands behind her back to be handcuffed.

Wilson was booked into the Johnson County Jail and charged with Assault on a Peace Officer and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on both counts, she could be sentenced to up to 13 months in prison.

Wilson was released on her own recognizance Monday and a public defender was assigned to her case. Further court dates have yet to be determined.
