Mobile home fire leads to death of Cedar Rapids woman

A Sunday afternoon mobile home fire has caused the death of a Cedar Rapids woman.

According to a release from the city’s Fire Department, firefighters responded to a 911 call from a nearby residence for fire at a manufactured home at 488 Drake Street SW at approximately 3:51 pm.

Firefighters from three stations arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the roof.  They initiated a fast-attack response to suppress the fire and search for occupants of the home.  Crews contained the fire to the room-of-origin.  Rescue crews located a victim in the same room and quickly moved the individual outside.  63-year-old Mary Jo Carlson succumbed to the fire and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other victims were located and no firefighter injuries were reported.  Extensive smoke and fire damage was sustained at the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
