Shots fired incidents were down in Iowa City in 2021 as compared to the previous year.
That’s according to statistics released by the Iowa City Police Department on Friday. They show 37 shots fired calls to the ICPD last year. That’s a 35% drop from the 57 reported in 2020, but over twice as many such calls as in 2019.

The number of actual shots fired was also down to 224 last year from 303 in 2020. But both numbers are significantly higher than the 56 shots fired in 2019.

The ICPD says in 2021, there were 17 people struck by gunfire – including three homicides – an increase over the 14 people struck in 2020. Even with a decrease from 2020 to 2021, shots fired incidents are at historically high numbers.

Investigations into the 37 shots fired incidents last year resulted in 26 arrests, and many of the incidents remain under investigation. Iowa City police also seized 131 firearms in 2021.
