The Muscatine City Council has voted to temporarily halt enforcement on the city’s pit bull band for the next four months.
The Muscatine Journal reports that the council has been discussing the possibility of lifting the ban for over a year. The discussion was tabled because of the COVID pandemic until late 2021, when it was determined that a decision would be made after the new council was seated at the beginning of this month.
Council member Jeff Osborne assured everyone that the public has been heard but no matter what they decided, half the citizenry would be angry.
Councilor Peggy Gordon believes a revised ordinance will be up for a vote soon, and said that halting the enforcement of the ban will give the council time to consider changes to the ordinance.
The moratorium doesn’t allow people to bring new pit bulls into Muscatine, nor does it remove the vicious animal ordinance.
The city’s ban on the breed was implemented first in 2003.
