Former University of Iowa president Mary Sue Coleman has been named temporary president of the University of Michigan after the dismissal of President Mark Schlissel.

It’s alleged that Schlissel had an inappropriate relationship with a university employee.

The Michigan Board of Regents said that members learned December 8th about the relationship from an anonymous complaint, and an investigation revealed that Schlissel used his university email account to communicate with the subordinate over the years, quote, “in a manner inconsistent with the dignity and reputation of the university.”

In the dismissal letter to Schlissel, the board included excerpts of emails exchanged between him and the employee. Copies of emails with the recipient’s name redacted were included in Saturday’s announcement on the school’s website

Coleman left the University of Iowa in 2002 after serving as president for seven years to take the job at the University of Michigan, which she held until 2014. Schlissel succeeded Coleman as president after serving as provost at Brown University.

It’s unknown how long Coleman will remain as temporary president, or what the Regents timeline is for naming a new president.
