The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics hosted a Facebook Live event Friday to answer questions about COVID-19.
Dr. Dan Diekema and Dr. Patricia Winokur both stressed that residents should continue to take precautions during the omicron surge, and to up their mask game if they haven’t done so already.
KCRG TV reports that Dr. Diekema said Johnson County has more cases than ever before, and the best safety measure is to get the vaccine and booster as soon as possible if you’re eligible. He also stressed that getting infected with omicron is not a given, and it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a mild case even if you’re vaccinated.
Dr. Winokur believes we will continue to see problems with variants “for a while,” and will continue until the whole world gets vaccinated. The more people who get vaccinated, the more herd immunity will grow. She advocated getting the booster shots as they become available, as they build up more antibodies and increase your protection against COVID-19.
