An Iowa City man who misled investigators about him being in possession of a stolen game console has been arrested on a warrant stemming from the incident.
During a burglary and theft investigation in March of 2020, then-20-year-old Abbott McClanahan-Ruhinda of Friendship Street was found to be in possession of a stolen game console worth about $400. He allegedly misled authorities by telling them he had purchased the item from a Minnesota resident, when in fact he had purchased it from acquaintances known through his employment at Up In Smoke on the 200 block of North Linn Street.
Those acquaintances reportedly committed a burglary where nearly $14,000 in cash and merchandise were taken. Among the items allegedly stolen were game consoles, one of which was in Abbott-McClanahan’s possession. Other items included gaming accessories, computers, computer equipment, jewelry, cash, a TV and soundbar.
A warrant for Abbott-McClanahan’s arrest was issued by the courts in July of 2021; he was booked and released from the Johnson County Jail Friday evening. He’s been charged with Accessory after the Fact and 4th Degree theft and could be sentenced to up to three years in jail if convicted.
