The University of Iowa is planning to purchase the Old Capitol Town Center.
That’s according to a ten-year facilities improvement plan announced by school officials this week. The plan also includes selling the Jefferson Building, making improvements to the Iowa Memorial Union and replacing its parking ramp, and improving UI athletics facilities.
The Old Capitol Town Center, formerly known as the Old Capitol Mall, opened in 1981. The UI already owns 62% of the facility, with the Gazette reporting the school has the right to outright purchase the property sometime in 2024-2025.
School officials told the newspaper the building’s location across from the Pentacrest already makes it a destination for students, and they plan to modernize the building to serve the needs of the UI community.
