A stranded motorist faces charges that he got high sniffing ketamine while waiting for a tow truck in Coralville.
An Iowa State Patrol trooper says he was flagged down by a tow truck driver on westbound Interstate 80 just east of the I-380 interchange just after 3:30 Sunday afternoon. The driver was concerned that the driver of the 2020 Mazda3 he was about to tow was impaired. The driver of the stalled car, identified as 27-year-old Caleb Bailey of Boulder, Colorado, told investigators he called AAA because he had a flat tire, and had been waiting for about three hours.
The trooper says Bailey showed signs of impairment. He allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests, but his breath alcohol level was a .00%.
The State Patrol says Bailey admitted to having ketamine in his jacket pocket, and a search of his person turned up about six grams of a white-powdery substance with a purple image and the words “heavy duty” on the label. Ketamine is a surgical anesthetic often used on dogs and horses.
Bailey allegedly later admitted to sniffing ketamine while he was waiting for the tow truck. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
