Emergency crews responded to a 14-vehicle accident Saturday night on Highway 218 between Hills and Riverside.
According to the Hills Fire Department Facebook page, at about 7:15pm the icy conditions led to what was initially a three-vehicle accident. Multiple agencies responded.
Due to the roadway conditions, multiple other vehicles on the roadway were involved in other accidents while emergency crews were dealing with the initial accident. The incident eventually involved four semi trucks and approximately ten passenger vehicles with an incident scene of over a half-mile. Only two minor injuries required transportation to a local hospital.
Highway 218 was closed for much of the night as crews towed involved vehicles and cleared the scene of debris. Plow trucks were then deployed to lay down salt and sand.
Hills Fire was assisted by firefighters from Riverside as well as Johnson County deputies and the Iowa State Patrol.
Tiffin firefighters were also busy Saturday night. They say on their Faecebook page they responded to four separate multi-vehicle crashes on the nearby Interstates and highways.
