An Iowa City man who was arrested in November on a string of burglaries and thefts throughout the year has had additional charges added.
Police say the spree started in February. 37-year-old Mark Poggenpohl of Mosswood Lane reportedly entered the Ace Hardware building on Dodge Street through the roof during the overnight hours of the 22nd. He then reportedly used a pry-bar to gain entry into the office door, where he took six cashier trays containing $200 each. Video footage form the incident allegedly shows Poggenphl entering the building with an Iowa Hawkeye backpack, which was left behind. A COVID mask inside the backpack was sent to the State Crime Lab and found a DNA match to Poggenpohl.
Police have now tied Poggenpohl to a second burglary at the Ace Hardware.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows the man entering the building through the roof in the overnight hours of July 11th. He then tore a pipe off a wall along with ripping the cord for a security camera. He then reportedly used a tool to cut more security wiring.
Poggenpohl allegedly used a saw and crow bar to break into an office door, where he broke into a filing cabinet and took $550 in cash. He reportedly left a knife on scene that was sent for DNA testing. It returned a positive match on Poggenpohl.
The man already was facing a prison term of over 50 years for previous incidents. The additional charges of 3rd degree burglary and second degree Criminal Mischief, both Class D felonies, would add another ten years to Poggenpohl’s sentence if he’s convicted on all charges.
