Iowa City Police have arrested a wrong-way driver they say travelled southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 380 and Highway 218 for several miles early on New Year’s Day.
The Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center received multiple reports of a Toyota RAV4 heading south in the northbound lanes of I-380 just south of the Forevergreen Road exit in North Liberty just before 4:15 Saturday morning. The vehicle was stopped by Iowa City Police just south of the I-80/380 interchange.
The driver, identified as 40-year-old Kevin Harris of Chicago, allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and refused breath, blood and urine testing.
Harris was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
According to Triple-A, an average of five people per year have died in wrong-way crashes in Iowa over the last decade.
