A Coralville man who police say used a knife to threaten another man at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center in Iowa City is back behind bars.

55-year-old Thomas Preyear of 5th Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8:45 Saturday night.  Court records show Preyear failed to appear at a September 13th case management conference on charges of Carrying a Knife Used in a Crime and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon.

Iowa City Police say just before 4:30pm on March 15th Preyear entered the rec center gym, confronted the victim, then pulled a knife on the man as the two were face-to-face. Preyear was allegedly upset about rumors he believed the other man had been spreading about him. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s account, and security video shows Preyear waving a knife around in an aggressive manner. The knife was later recovered from Preyear’s person.

Preyear faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted on both charges.
