A knife-wielding Iowa City man was arrested Thursday night after allegedly chasing and assaulting a woman outside his residence.

Iowa City Police were called to a medical call on Westgate Street just after 8:30pm. Arriving officers were told that a woman had been assaulted by 51-year-old Jody Carter. The woman told investigators that she and Carter had been arguing when he slashed the seats of their car with a knife. He then reportedly chased her around before striking her an unknown number of times in the head and back. During the scuffle the woman fell to the ground and injured her ankle. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She later described her and Carter as longtime friends.

Carter allegedly admitted the two had been arguing and she fell after running. He’s charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail.
