A Coralville man will spend five years in prison after being sentenced on child sex abuse charges.

According to police, the incidents occurred between July 20th 2018 and October 25th 2019. 38-year-old Robin Castillo Fuentes of 16th Avenue allegedly forced the child to partially disrobe, then reportedly used his hands and mouth to kiss and fondle the minor child inappropriately on multiple occasions. Fuentes allegedly admitted to the acts.

Castillo Fuentes was originally charged with two counts of child endangerment causing injury, 14 counts of indecent contact with a child, 13 charges of child endangerment, and 16 counts of lascivious conduct with a minor child. He was convicted in September of 14 counts each of lascivious conduct with a minor and indecent contact with a child, one count of child endangerment and one count of simple assault.

The Gazette reports that Sixth Judicial District Judge Justin Lightfoot ran three of the sentences consecutively and concurrent with the others for a total of five years in prison. Lightfoot also ordered Castillo Fuentes to comply with the requirements of the sex offender registry and to serve 10 years of a special sentence of parole following his prison term.

Castillo Fuentes reportedly recanted his story during trial, saying he lied to police when they questioned him. He also forced the child to testify during trial. The newspaper also reports that Castillo Fuentes cursed at the victims and made a profane hand gesture as he was being taken out of the courtroom. That caused him to be arrested on contempt charges for violating the no-contact order. He could get up to 180 additional days in jail if convicted.
