An Iowa City man has been charged with his second OWI and Public Intoxication after allegedly hitting a Highway 6 guardrail.

29-year-old Hakizimana Gustave of Westside Drive was traveling along the 500 block of Highway 6 at approximately 9:20 pm Wednesday when he allegedly hit a guardrail. A witness to the incident observed Gustave trying to drive away from the scene, and drove him from the scene of the accident to a nearby Kum & Go. The witness then gave a description of Gustave to officers, who arrived to see him running westbound in the middle of the road towards Riverside Drive.

Gustave reportedly was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He was then arrested with Public Intoxication. Upon searching his person, Gustave was reportedly found with the keys to the vehicle involved in the crash earlier.

A PBT showed his blood-alcohol level at .202 percent.

Gustave could be sentenced to up to 25 months if convicted on both counts.
