A Cedar Rapids man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a person who reportedly was trying to prevent him from taking his girlfriend’s car.

Police say the incident occurred Monday at approximately 10:40 am in the 400 block of North Iowa Street in Solon. 23-year-old Markel Buckner of B Avenue Northwest had allegedly been in a verbal altercation with his girlfriend and went to leave, attempting to take her car.

The girlfriend and another person attempted to physically stop Buckner from taking the vehicle. Buckner then allegedly grabbed a broom handle and hit the other person twice on the shoulder and another two times on the hand.

Buckner was arrested and charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
