Hawkeye fans are showing their generosity by donating to disaster victims of their Citrus Bowl opponent’s home state, reeling from unprecedented tornado damage for this time of year.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz posted a message on the Hawkeye Football Twitter account, saying, “planning for a bowl is nothing compared to the challenge the victims of this weekend’s severe weather outbreak are facing now and long into the future.”
Ferentz contacted former Hawkeye and Kentucky head football coach Mark Stoops, who told him that his athletic department is raising money for victims through a telethon on Lexington Kentucky station WLEX Tuesday between 4 and 8 pm.
Donations for the victims are also being accepted through the Red Cross. As of Tuesday morning, over $102,000 has been raised towards their goal of $500,000.
Coach Ferentz ended the Twitter message by saying, “Hawk fans are a passionate fan base. Let’s show them how compassionate we can be.”
The number to call during the telethon is 833-510-0030; online donations are being taken at https://www.redcross.org/donate/cm/wlextv-pub.html/
