An Iowa City man has been arrested after a brief police chase down Hayden Fry Way in Coralville.
According to arrest records, a Coralville Police officer noticed 33-year-old Samuel Lockett III of Aster Avenue driving without his lights on the Coralville Strip just before 12:30 Monday morning before making an improper left turn onto 1st Avenue. Lockett was allegedly crossing lanes and speeding about 35 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.
A traffic stop was initiated, and Lockett allegedly asked the approaching officers “What’s up?” When he was asked to turn off the car, Lockett allegedly accelerated away, leading a brief chase up northbound 1st Avenue at speeds up to 75 miles per hour before ditching his 2015 Chrysler 200C and fleeing on foot.
Lockett was later captured and charged with Eluding and Driving While Suspended. If convicted he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
Lockett was also wanted for allegedly breaking into a woman’s residence and trashing it, defying a no-contact order in the process.
