Construction on the new University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art is to be completed this month.

According to the Daily Iowan, Director Lauren Lessing told the UI Staff Council on Wednesday that the facility will be completed and turned over to the university on December 23rd. She added that staff can start settling into the building in mid-January.

Actual art will not be moved into the facility initially because new furnishings inside can leach chemicals that could damage paintings. That process should be complete in April, when they’ll start setting pieces up.

The new UI Stanley Museum of Art is three stories high with two terraces, and an underground parking lot. Ceilings are 12 feet high to accommodate larger pieces, and some of the gallery walls are moveable to accommodate different-sized exhibitions.

A formal ribbon cutting ceremony is set for September 2nd.
