Former UI wrestling champion and West High coach passes from COVID

Former NCAA Wrestling champion and wrestling coach with West High School Mark Reiland has died.

Social media posts from family and friends indicate that he became infected with COVID three weeks ago and succumbed to the virus Wednesday. He was 53..

Reiland was a two-time state champion at Eagle Grove, and twice named All-American while at the University of Iowa.

Following his wrestling career, he became a coach, leading Solon to two successful seasons before taking the job at Iowa City West. During his 17 years there, he coached 84 state place winners, including 22 state champions and 13 runners-up.

Reiland was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016. Arrangements are pending.
