US Marshals were assisted by Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies as they arrested a man Tuesday west of West Branch.
KWWL TV reports that deputies were called to assist Marshals with the arrest in the 3600 block of Oasis Road Northeast. The man’s identity has not been released, but officials said he was wanted on a federal warrant.
The suspect reportedly barricaded himself in a farm home that he didn’t own for over two hours. Negotiators talked to the suspect but he refused to surrender. He then reportedly left the house and drove around the area, followed by authorities. He returned to the house and surrendered.
There were no reported injuries. The county employed their military-style MRAP vehicle for the standoff. It has been the source of objections from protesters who believe that civilian police forces shouldn’t deploy military-style vehicles. The MRAP has now been used in 20 documented deployments since acquiring it from the federal government in 2014.
Sheriff Brad Kunkel has asked the county to approve a $240,000 expenditure for a Lenco BearCat armored vehicle that would replace the MRAP as part of his department’s 2023 fiscal year budget.
