The Iowa City City Council will be considering new precinct maps, which will determine where residents cast their votes over the next decade.
The Daily Iowan reports that the Johnson County Auditor’s Office is proposing an increase in the number of precincts from 24 to 27 because no precinct can have more than 3500 people in it. There are currently 5 precincts over that limit.
Travis Weipert, the county Auditor, tells the paper that the process is required every ten years, and their goal is to keep the precinct populations under around 3000 so that voters don’t have to wait in line for too long on election days.
The council will be considering three differently-drawn precinct maps. Once they approve one, it will be sent to Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate to sign off on. The council is supposed to have the map approved by January 3rd, so they will be discussing the issue during tonight’s meeting.
