An Iowa City woman faces multiple charges after police say she brought a knife to a daycare after her child and another got into a dispute, then gave the knife to a child and told her to run from police.
Police say 44-year-old Samahir Almhairat of Westwinds Drive went to Pheasant Ridge Daycare on Roberts Road at 4:45 Thursday afternoon armed with a butcher knife. Once inside, she allegedly swung the knife around and threatened to hurt individuals inside. Investigators say Almhairat later told them she wanted to incite fear because there had been a dispute between her child and another.
When police arrived at Almhairat’s residence, she allegedly gave the knife to a child and told her to run. The child had to be disarmed as police say she began chasing after others.
Almhairat is charged with Going Armed With Intent, Assault While Displaying a Weapon and Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
