An Iowa City man currently accused of illegally obtaining a firearm now faces the same charge again after a second incident.

Police were called to a welfare check for 29-year-old Victor Curry of the Lake Ridge manufactured housing community just after 1:15 Thursday afternoon. Curry had an active warrant for his arrest, and police say he was found in possession of a baggie of marijuana.

The warrant stems from a May 11th incident where Curry allegedly gave money to a co-defendant, who then purchased a Canik 9mm handgun on his behalf. Curry is not allowed to possess a firearm after a 2016 domestic abuse conviction. The weapon was recovered during a search of Curry’s then-residence on Westwinds Drive on June 10th. That search also turned up marijuana.

Curry is charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Dominion or Control of a Firearm By a Domestic Abuse Offender. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.

Curry is facing another charge of possessing a firearm as a domestic abuser after he allegedly purchased a gun from another man in September. Trial in that case is set for March 8th.
