An Iowa City man who allegedly assaulted firefighters and ambulance paramedics when being treated for intoxication last month was taken into custody Sunday on warrants relating to the incident.
According to the criminal complaint, 36-year-old Darius Stewart of Friendship Street was allegedly found passed out at the Eden Apartments the evening of October 22nd. While on scene, Stewart reportedly spat towards firefighters.
He was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by the Johnson County Ambulance Service, and while en route allegedly became combative with paramedics, striking one in the arm. The paramedic had to pin him against a cot to prevent Stewart from attacking him further.
A warrant for Stewart’s arrest was issued on October 28th; he was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 9:36 pm Sunday. He’s been charged with 1st degree Harassment and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. If convicted on both counts, Stewart faces a jail sentence of up to 3 years.
