A Coralville man has been arrested after attempting to elude police who were trying to execute a traffic stop on him.

26-year-old Devontae King of 20th Avenue was driving a Toyota Camry at around 11:20 pm, traveling westbound on the Coralville Strip going 60 miles an hour. A police officer activated his lights and siren and attempted to overtake the vehicle. King allegedly continued at a high rate of speed, cutting in front of another vehicle while he turned northbound on 1st Avenue.

King reportedly continued west on 5th Street, driving on the wrong side of the road before turning southbound on 4th Avenue. He eventually gave up trying to elude the officer and stopped its intersection with 2nd Street.

Upon contact, King allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes and had the odor of ingested alcohol. A bottle of Crown Royal whiskey was reportedly located in the Camry. King ultimately refused all chemical testing. Passengers in the vehicle told police that King failed to stop for police because he was scared.

A check of King’s driving record showed his status as revoked.

He faces a number of charges, including suspicion of OWI, Eluding, driving while Revoked, and four additional moving violations. If convicted on all counts, King faces up to seven years in prison.
