A North Liberty man faces numerous charges after allegedly fighting with Johnson County sheriff’s deputies after his arrest for Operating While Intoxicated.
Cedar Rapids Police responded to a one-vehicle accident just before 2:30 Thursday morning on southbound Interstate 380 just north of the Swisher exit. Officers told arriving Johnson County deputies that they believed the driver, 39-year-old Anthony Pompo of North Sunset Drive, was intoxicated.
Pompo was taken to the Swisher fire department for field sobriety testing. He allegedly showed signs of impairment and was taken to the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety offices on South Capitol Street in Iowa City for Datamatser testing. That testing showed his breath alcohol content as .224%.
While at UI Police headquarters, Pompo allegedly kicked and spat at deputies before being tested. After testing was complete, he allegedly threw a telephone violently to the ground and fought with deputies, with one officer suffering a knee injury.
Pompo is charged with OWI – 2nd Offense, Interference With Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Driving While Suspended. If convicted on all charges, Pompo faces a maximum of four years in prison.
