A Houghton Iowa man was arrested early Saturday for allegedly driving drunk while barred.

Police 29-year-old Mitchell Kruse was stopped just after 2:30 am for a traffic violation near the intersection of Burlington and Linn Streets. Upon contact, the driver showed signs of intoxication, which included slurred speech and the odor of ingested alcohol.

After showing signs of impairment on field testing, he agreed to a Datamaster test that showed his blood-alcohol level at .177 percent.

A check of Kruse’s driving record showed him as barred.

He was taken into custody and charged with his second OWI and driving while barred. If convicted on both counts, Kruse could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.
