A fifteen percent jump in Iowa marijuana dispensary sales has been attributed to the opening of a location in Iowa City.

The Gazette reports that the state’s total October sales of nearly $616,000 was the highest of any month in the year so far. Iowa’s Medical Cannabis Office plans to ask the state legislature to allow the Department of Public Health to lift the restriction of dispensary licenses from just five so that residents would have easier access to its products.

The Board of the Cannabis office voted unanimously Friday on a recommendation to the Legislature to change the law. They say it would allow the agency to put more dispensaries in urban areas with a higher concentration of patients, while balancing rural demand.

The newspaper reports that patients must have a qualifying medical condition certified by a health care practitioner, and a state registration card. As of October, there are over 7300 active cardholders.

The board also asked the legislature to make medical marijuana tax free, and provide lower registration fees to qualified veterans.

The Iowa Cannabis Company opened a location on Highway 1 West in Iowa City last month.
