An Iowa City man faces OWI charges after allegedly leaving the scene of a domestic assault.
Police say the incidents occurred on Wednesday night. 21-year-old Brandon Ghumm of South First Avenue and his girlfriend reportedly got into a verbal argument at his residence after Ghumm had been drinking. The argument allegedly escalated to the point where Ghumm pushed the woman down to the ground and put his hands around her throat. The woman stated she felt like she was going to pass out while he was holding her down.
Ghumm reportedly left the scene, and at 10:53 that night, he was observed running a red light at the intersection of First and Muscatine Avenues. Officers stopped Ghumm’s Dodge Ram and say he had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He reportedly admitted to drinking earlier in the night.
After performing poorly on field testing, Ghumm provided a PBT showing a blood-alcohol level of .123 percent. A subsequent Datamaster test showed the level at .083 percent.
Ghumm was taken into custody and charged with his third OWI and Domestic Assault Impeding Airflow. He faces a prison sentence of up to seven years if convicted on both counts.
