An underage Wisconsin man carrying a bottle of rum in downtown Iowa City Saturday night was arrested on public intoxication and other charges.

Police allegedly saw 19-year-old Nicholas Kyte of Brookfield Wisconsin carrying a half-full bottle of Admiral Nelson rum near the intersection of Burlington and Linn Streets just before 9 pm. An officer called out to Kyte, who looked at him and took off running. He was arrested after a foot chase and searched incident to being apprehended.

The officer allegedly found a completely fictitious Illinois driver’s license that made Kyte appear to be of legal drinking age. He reportedly admitted knowing he was running from the police.

Kyte was charged with Interference with Official Acts, Possession of Fictitious ID and Public Intoxication. If convicted, he faces a jail sentence of up to 14 months. Kyte was released on his own recognizance Monday. Additional court dates have yet to be set.
