A homeless man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly trying to coerce bystanders to take a 2018 BMW from Carousel Pre-Owned.
According to the arrest report, officers responded to the dealership around 7:15pm on reports of a stolen vehicle. 34-year-old Darryl Minniefield was on the scene with several staff members. Minniefield allegedly asked some bystanders to bring a car to him from Carousel, claiming that he owned the vehicle but couldn’t drive it because he didn’t have a license.
Staff watched the bystanders move the vehicle across the street to HyVee Gas and approached them to ask what they were doing. They reportedly explained that Minniefield had asked them to move his car for him.
Employees at Carousel recognized Minniefield, as he had been continually trespassing at the car dealer earlier in the day, and had attempted to take another car. They told police that they believed Minniefield was “casing” the lot.
Minniefield allegedly admitted to police that he asked the bystanders to get the car for him so that he could go to the mall, and told them he didn’t know when he was going to return it.
The 2018 BMW was priced at approximately $47,000.
A check of court records showed Minniefield with an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for arraignment on a Driving While Barred charge. He was also charged with 1st degree Theft, a Class C Felony. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
Minniefield lists his address as the CommUnity Crisis center on Gilbert Court.
