An Iowa City woman who reportedly refused to identify herself after a traffic stop is accused of kicking the arresting officer.

According to the arrest report, 19-year-old Jamellah Cheeks of East Court Street was heading northbound on 1st Avenue Sunday afternoon near its intersection with Bradford Drive and allegedly failed to maintain her lane. She reportedly failed to stop for the light, headed eastbound on Muscatine Avenue, and began speeding.

An officer initiated a traffic stop on Cheeks, who finally stopped after turning southbound on William Avenue. She allegedly refused to identify herself, and at one point began raising her window and tried to start her vehicle again. Cheeks reportedly refused to exit the vehicle despite several commands to do so.

Police were finally able to finally get Cheeks out of the vehicle, and when attempting to take her into custody she allegedly kicked an officer in the lower abdomen.

A check of her driving records showed her barred through July 2022 as an habitual offender.

Cheeks was charged with Assault on Peace Officers, Driving while Barred as an Habitual Offender, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to over three years in prison.
