A stranded motorist faces charges that he fought with Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies who were checking on him as he walked along Interstate 380 early Saturday morning.

The arresting officer reports seeing 56-year-old Douglas Smith of Keokuk walking along the shoulder of I-380 northbound between the Iowa River bridge and the Swisher exit just after 3:45am. He was about a mile north of a broken-down Ford Taurus.

Investigators say Smith was uncooperative, and it was discovered he had a barred license. As he was being taken into custody, he was reportedly resistive and had to be taken to the ground and handcuffed. There were no signs of another person involved with the vehicle.

Smith is charged with Driving While Barred and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail. Court records show Douglas has at least three Operating While Intoxicated convictions in Johnson County alone.
