Hitting a pole with his car has led to drug and drunk driving charges against an Iowa City man.

Iowa City Police were called to a one-vehicle accident on the 1900 block of Taylor Drive just after 6pm Thursday for a white SUV that had hit a pole and fled the scene. The 2015 GMC Terrain in question was found around the corner with the driver, identified as Jerlon Wilkins of Taylor Drive, standing next to it. The keys were still in the ignition.

Wilkins allegedly showed signs of intoxication, performed poorly on field sobriety testing, and refused breath testing. He was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, and police say marijuana was found in his pocket. Wilkins is now additionally charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
