An Iowa City man arrested on drug charges added to his woes when he allegedly tried to smuggle meth into the Johnson County Jail.

The incident began at approximately 10:40 pm Wednesday, when an officer familiar with 52-year-old Jeffrey Chapman saw him driving a vehicle in the 2100 block of Hollywood Boulevard, and knew his license to be suspended for non-payment of fines.

When stopped, Chapman instructed a passenger to obtain his ID from the trunk, and the officer detected an odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle.

A probable cause search was conducted, and during the search, Chapman allegedly had a red pipe drop from his pocket. He admitted the pipe was his and was used for smoking marijuana. Two other glass pipes with meth residue were allegedly discovered in Chapman’s purse. A clear baggie of meth was also reportedly found.

Chapman was arrested and taken to the Johnson County Jail. The officer was later contacted just before 12:40 am Thursday and told his prisoner had tried to conceal a quantity of meth. It was reportedly found in a portion of a McDonald’s bag rolled up in his sock.

Chapman was charged with a controlled substance violation, Driving While Suspended, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of contraband in a correctional institution. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
