Des Moines man arrested after allegedly assaulting police on the Ped Mall

Allegedly assaulting police on the Ped Mall has led to a Des Moines man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say they observed 37-year-old Joshua Deverney walk up to and assault two random people on the Ped Mall near the breezeway next to The Graduate Hotel just before 2am Sunday. Deverney allegedly hit both victims in the back of the head.

Police say when they tried to detain Deverney, he refused to put his hands behind his back, struck one officer in the hand and pushed another away. He then allegedly tried to flee the scene.

Deverney was tased and taken into custody. He allegedly showed signs of intoxication, admitted to being intoxicated, and provided a blood alcohol level of .146%.

Deverney is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference with Official Acts, Public Intoxication, and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 15 months in jail.
