The University of Iowa is seeking emergency funding from the Board of Regents to fix dozens of windows at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital that have been deemed dangerous.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, official documents filed with the regents indicate inspectors found 77 damaged or at-risk windows in need of immediate repair. The cost to apply 3M safety film to the windows is estimated at over $770,000.

Normally any expenditure at a regents university over $100,000 must be put out to public bid, but special exceptions can be made to repair potentially dangerous situations. The UI is asking to contract with Marv’s Glass on Lafayette Street as early as next week.  That’s when the regents are expected to vote on the emergency funding request.

The Gazette reports UI officials declined to comment on the status of an earlier request school officials made to the regents in April for $10 million to $15 million to replace two floors of damaged windows at the hospital, which opened only four years ago.

School officials say they plan to hold the responsible parties accountable.
