A Cedar Rapids man has been taken into custody after he reportedly told officers “the wire inside him” told him to steal a vehicle in North Liberty Wednesday.

According to police, 29-year-old Andrew Cantonwine-Zach of 1st Avenue Southwest was seen on surveillance video around 3:10pm entering a 2005 Subaru Impreza on Lions Drive and driving off with it.

Cedar Rapids Police located the vehicle at approximately 7:20pm Thursday with Cantonwine-Zach behind the wheel, at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 14th Street.  The man was positively identified through the surveillance video.

When questioned under Miranda, Cantonwine-Zach allegedly admitted taking the vehicle because the wire inside him told him to do so.

Cantonwine-Zach has been charged with 2nd degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a five-year prison term if convicted.
