A registered sex offender was arrested for a violation after allegedly assaulting a woman outside an Iowa City nightclub.
Iowa City Police responded to Iowa Avenue in front of El Ray’s Live and Dive just before midnight Wednesday after several witnesses reported seeing a man shove a woman to the ground. Investigators determined that 53-year-old Michael Richardson had shoved his intimate partner to the ground. The woman later corroborated the witness accounts.
Police say Richardson listed his address as an apartment on Governor Street, conflicting with information on file with the state’s sex offender registry. Richardson is forced to register as a sex offender after a 2003 conviction for Assault With Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse against a girl between the ages of 14 and 17.
Richardson was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault – 2nd Offense and a Sex Offender Registry Violation – 2nd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
Richardson has multiple previous domestic assault convictions.
