Allegedly threatening a downtown business employee and damaging a display has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man.

Iowa City Police were called to Buzz Salon on the Ped Mall just before 3:45 Friday afternoon for a subject who broke a display. Officers say they had previously warned 25-year-old Steven Elliott of Kirkwood Avenue to stay away from the business and to stop harassing passersby. An employee of Buzz told police Elliott harassed her daily, and requested a criminal trespass warning.

During Friday’s incident, Elliott allegedly made a gesture as if he was going to punch the employee in the face. He then allegedly violently shook a display table, breaking a pottery item valued at $100.

Elliott was placed under arrest. Police say he then threatened to come back and assault the woman with his belt after he got out of jail.

Elliott is charged with 2nd Degree Harassment and 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
