Iowa City Police say a driver tested positive for multiple drugs after she reportedly passed out with her baby grandchild in the back seat.

Officers were called to Club Car Wash on Highway 1 West just after 1:30 Friday afternoon for a woman passed out with a baby in her running car. As they were en route, responding units were told the woman had woken up and was trying to drive away in a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta.

The suspect’s vehicle was located turning left from Ruppert Road onto Highway 1 West. Police say the driver ignored the arresting officer’s lights and siren before finally pulling over on the 1600 block of Highway 1 West. The driver, identified as 46-year-old Rebecca Lucas of Ainsworth, allegedly admitted she’d passed out earlier near the vacuums at the car wash and had taken methadone about three hours earlier. Her four-month-old grandchild was in the back seat.

Lucas allegedly showed multiple signs of impairment, although her blood alcohol level was measured at .0%. A drug smart check cup showed Lucas to have amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, methadone, THC and tranquilizers in her system.

Lucas was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, Child Endangerment and Driving While Barred. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
