A University of Iowa student was charged with Criminal Mischief after snapping a tree in downtown Iowa City.

Police say that they were contacted Monday by Landscaping Services, who reported that a Linden tree had been snapped off over the weekend near the intersection of Madison and Washington streets.

An officer reviewed camera footage and showed that the incident had occurred at approximately 1:50 AM Sunday. A male with long blond hair, wearing a white polo shirt and tan pants reportedly used his body weight to break the tree.

The same male allegedly used his school issued access card to get into Reinow Hall at approximately  2:04 that same morning.

The student, identified as 18-year-old John Hussin, allegedly admitted to being the person responsible for damaging the tree. He reportedly did it on a dare from friends at the time.

Hussin has been charged with 4th degree Criminal Mischief, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
