An Iowa City man has been jailed after allegedly stabbing a man with a hunting knife.

Police say the incident occurred just after 1 am on Thursday. 58-year-old Tony Hansen of Crescent Street reportedly confronted a man about a stolen bicycle in the 100 block of East Benton Street. He allegedly brandished a large hunting knife in a threatening manner, then stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

Hansen fled the scene in a vehicle, and the victim told officers he believed they would find him in a nearby park.

Hansen was located there, in the vehicle matching the victim’s description. He reportedly still had the hunting knife in his possession. The victim was called to the scene and positively identified Hansen as the man who stabbed him.

Upon contact, Hansen had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. The engine was reportedly still warm, and he claimed that he had been parked for five minutes before officers’ arrival. Hansen also allegedly told police he hadn’t consumed alcohol for hours.

A Datamaster test showed Hansen’s blood-alcohol level at .171 percent. A check of Hansen’s record showed OWI convictions in 2010, 2019 and at least three previous convictions outside the last 12 years.  His driving status was found to be barred until November 5th of this year.

Hansen faces a number of charges for the incident. They include Assault while Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon while committing a Felony, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, 3rd offense OWI, and Driving while Barred. If convicted on all counts, Hansen faces a prison sentence of up to eleven years.
